January 2016 FIRST GOBLET FOR 2016 Now that Christmas is over for another year the TTFC members have been out and about fishing for the first Goblet Fish of the New Year, 31 anglers took to our beautiful waters comprising of 10 ladies, 15 men and 6 juniors all trying their luck at catching Whiting the Goblet fish for January. Whilst Saturday was a little windy overall the fishing conditions were good, Sunday was another great fishing day and while the Lake was still a little dirty from the recent rain it was clearing on the incoming tide. It was a great weekend with an impressive 104 fish caught and recorded at the measure in BBQ at Tuross Head Country Club. Paul Brown won the Goblet with a 43.2cm Whiting giving him an outstanding 100.43 points. Bruce Kennedy took out the Goblet Fish that has been carried over from November due to no Leatherjackets the Goblet Fish for that month being caught. Tamara Whitehead clean up winning both the Ladies Lake and Estuary and Rock and Beach awards with a huge 91cm Flathead and a 56.6cm Salmon congratulations Tamara great fishing. No Ladies outside entries were recorded this month. TUROSS HEAD 2016 FLATHEAD & BREAM TOURNAMENT Preparations for our Flagship Tournament are well underway with most of last year’s sponsors on board again this year along with some great new sponsors, with entries are well up on this time last year. Tournament dates are the Canberra Long weekend 12 – 13 March 2016 for more information or an entry form please visit our website turossheadfishingclub.org TURKEY AWARD Turkey awards are always hotly contested and lots of fun for our members, this month was no exception with a funny story about Tamara Whitehead struggling with both looking after the baby and pulling in her big flathead catch but was just being piped at the post by our Competition Secretary John Suthern’s story of installing a letterbox for a client back to front, now that would have confused the postie, fortunately the cement hadn’t dried and he was able to fix it, John also managed to catch a large dog on his line while fishing at the beach winning him the Turkey of the Month award. FIRST MEASURE IN FOR 2016 Goblet competition measure in this month was at the Tuross Head Country Club with 104 fish measured. Next month’s Goblet weekend is 13 -14 February 2016 and the Goblet Fish is Blackfish. Posted by Rusty Martin on 12:18 pm in fishing reports | Comments Off on TUROSS HEAD COUNTRY CLUB FISHING CLUB’S FISHING UPDATE

December 2015 LAST GOBLET FOR 2015 With Christmas and holidays just around the corner many Fishing Club members are sending Santa their wish lists for new fishing rods, lures and even boats, others were getting their Christmas shopping done but 20 anglers still managed to find time to get out to their favorite fishing spots in pursue of the last Goblet fish for 2015. John Suthern won the Goblet with his 25.4cm Garfish congratulations John. Gavin Robinson took out the Men’s outside with a 48.2cm Mowong and Rod Federer Men’s inside with 59.5cm Salmon. We had four ladies, 12 men and 4 juniors compete with a total of 50 fish caught and measured in including a winning good sized bream at 30.5cm caught by junior Mathilda Brennan. Great catch Mathilda. Most of the weekend saw great fishing weather but Sunday afternoon the wind came up making it a little cool but as it was the last Goblet weekend for the year it didn’t stop our enthusiastic Fishing Club members enjoying the Christmas BBQ held at the Tuross Head Country Club where Santa and his elves popped in to hand out presents to some very excited juniors thanks Santa. The Fishing Club Catering Officer Janine Campbell provided an awesome meal with Lamb on the spit that was enjoyed by 50 plus Fishing Club members. TURKEY AWARD It seems turkeys are not only good to eat at Christmas time as there was some good turkey stories this month like our President Neil Alexander losing his son’s rod from the back of the boat, I think Neil has been mentioned in turkey stories several times in the last couple of months, getting to be a bit of a habit Neil! Then the one where John McNeill fell overboard and of course his phone was in his pocket and not water proof model but the award for this month went to Linda Saberton who at the annual Presentation night with 50’s dress theme lost her 50’s style petticoats while on her way to collect her award, Linda didn’t miss a beat just hitch them up and kept walking!   LAST MEASURE IN FOR 2015 Goblet competition measure in this month was at the Tuross Head Country Club with 50 fish measured. We start the New Year Goblet weekend on 16 – 17 January 2016 with Whiting as the Goblet fish. RESULTS: Goblet:                                               John Suthern                       25.4cm Garfish         57 points Ladies Lake and Estuary:               Linda Saberton        35cm Whiting                       64.78 points Ladies Rock and Beach:                Not awarded Ladies Outside:                                Not Awarded Men’s Lake and Estuary:                Rod Federer              41.2cm Whiting                    91.73 points Men’s Outside:                                 Gavin Roberson       48.2cm Morwong                 75.5 points Rock and Beach                              Rod Federer              59.5cm Salmon                    72.14 points Junior:                                                Mathilda Brennan    30.5cm Bream                      52 points Mystery Weight:                                Not awarded Turkey of the Month:                       Linda Saberton       Share this:Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Google+ (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)Click to email this to a friend (Opens in new...

Tuross Head Fishing Club Report November 2015

Posted by Rusty Martin on 2:35 pm in fishing reports | Comments Off on Tuross Head Fishing Club Report November 2015

TUROSS HEAD COUNTRY CLUB FISHING CLUB’S FISHING UPDATE. November 2015 ALWAYS GREAT FISHING IN TUROSS Despite the rain and not so nice weather many of the Tuross Head Fishing Club Members were out with rod and reel to pursue the Goblet Fish for November. The Goblet for November was Leatherjacket.   Bruce Kennedy caught the only Leatherjacket of the weekend and unfortunately for Bruce it was underside and therefore it was let go to hopefully be caught again when it has grown to full size therefore no Goblet award for this month. Overall there was 56 fish caught for this Goblet competition weekend of 14 to 16 November. While there was no Goblet Fish measured in there was still some good size fish caught, measured, photographed and released including a 57.5cm Snapper and 57.5 Salmon both caught by Rod Federer. Tammy Paul also caught a good size Salmon at 56.4cm and it is always great to see the juniors out catching fish and enjoying themselves, congratulations to Lucus Brown for his 47cm Flathead. MANY TURKEYS THIS MONTH AND EDEN WEEKEND There was many entries for the Turkey award this month and most of the stories were from the Tuross Head / Eden fishing weekend held 6 to 8 November.   One these stories involved person who got picked by car and was half way to the fishing spot before realizing they forgot their fishing rod, then there was the person in the same car who forgot to bring the bait! Bit hard to catch anything without the bait and that was Tuross Head Fishing Club Present Neil Alexander trying for his second turkey award in two months but the award went to Scott Paul who after only six weeks of being married lost his wedding ring not sure if his wife Tammy has forgiven him yet. BOATSHED MEASURE IN Goblet competition measure in this month was at the Tuross Head Boatshed with more than 40 Fishing Club Members plus juniors meeting for the measure in, with the improved weather, good fishing stories and great food it was a very enjoyable evening. Next month’s Goblet Fish is Garfish and the competition weekend is 11 to 13 December. RESULTS: Goblet:                                               Not Awarded – Will jackpot for next month Ladies Lake and Estuary:               Linda Saberton        32cm Whiting             51.74 points Ladies Rock and Beach:                Tammy Paul              56.4 Salmon                  67.75 points Ladies Outside:                                Not Awarded – Will jackpot for next month Men’s Lake and Estuary:                Eric Saberton           41cm Whiting            90.87 points Men’s Outside:                                 Rod Federer              57.5cm Snapper       90 points Rock and Beach                              Rod Federer              57.5cm Salmon        69.32 points Junior:                                              Lucus Brown            47cm Flathead         47.19 points Mystery Weight:                                Not awarded – Will jackpot for next month Turkey of the Month:                       Scott Paul     Share this:Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Google+ (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)Click to email this to a friend (Opens in new...

Fishing Report October 2015

Posted by Rusty Martin on 2:52 pm in fishing reports | Comments Off on Fishing Report October 2015

TUROSS HEAD COUNTRY CLUB FISHING CLUB’S FISHING UPDATE. October 20, 2015 JOHN’S FIRST WIN Every October, Tuross Head Fishing Club members welcome the warmer weather and take to the beaches, rocks, and their boats in the hope of catching the “Goblet” fish which for October is Flathead.   John McNeil with his first entry to the monthly competition won the Goblet prize with a 68.1 Flattie congratulations John we are sure this won’t be your last win. Sixteen Anglers took to the water with 67 fish caught and submitted for judging in the competition. We had three ladies, eleven men and two juniors enter with 22 Flathead caught.   As the Goblet was Flathead and there are two different Flathead types on our species list (outside and dusky), both earning different points per cm, using our new measuring system the Fish with maximum points earns the Goblet. It was possible that a smaller outside Flathead could have won the competition with the highest points however it was not the case this month. Most fish were entered by photo with Scott Paul helping John Suthern to scrutinize the entries and enter the lengths. The measuring took longer than usual this month as it was the first time this system of scoring had been used at the monthly competition BBQ and extra effort was put in to display all the sizes and sores on a large board for all to see. While the fishing was still a bit slow over the weekend it is improving as the water and weather warms up. ANNUAL PRESENTATION With only one more Goblet competition before our big presentation night on 28 November members have been very active in the hope of gaining more points and winning a trophy. Our presentation theme this year is ‘Fishing Days are our Happy Days’ with 50’s / 60’s dress tickets are selling fast we are planning a night of fun reserve your table now see any of the committee or people selling raffle tickets on Wednesday night. OCTOPRIZE Don’t forget to come along on Wednesday night at the Tuross Head Country Club for the raffles and the Octoprize, only four fish left to choose from and with $2,200 to win it has to go off soon.  You never know your luck remember the more raffle tickets you purchase the more free entries into the Octoprize draw. TURKEY OF THE MONTH AWARD Due to lack of entries Turkey of the month hasn’t been awarded for the last few months but this month we had several excellent entries including Neil & Pam Alexander coming back from holidays and realizing they gave the house key to the house / chook sitter to use and forgot to take their key with them so had to track down the sitter at 10pm at night to let them in. Then there was the one that after catching some good size fish and taking photos on his phone he somehow lost all the photos when charging his phone, now that’s a different slant on the one that got away, however the award went to Neil Alexander and Tammy Paul for their story of Neil feeding Tammy at her wedding to Scott as she had her hands full with a plate of food and a drink and somehow...

Tuross Head Fishing Club Report September 2015

TUROSS HEAD COUNTRY CLUB FISHING CLUB’S FISHING UPDATE. September 2015 BUCKENDERRA GOBLET WEEKEND. September has so far brought us some beautiful weather and members of the Tuross Head Fishing Club are out and about in pursuit of our monthly ‘goblet’ fish. This month the goblet fish is Trout and last weekend 15 fishing club members including juniors hit the road for a weekend of family fun and fishing at Buckenderra where the Trout were plentiful. There was even time on Friday to stop for some fun in the snow before unpacking rods and getting down to the serious business of fishing. With excellent weather the group that attended had a wonderful time with a great haul of 32 fish caught. It was a delight to see many of the juniors out having a go and catching some good sized fish with Sam Gschwend and Lucas Brown both catching a 59cm length Brown Trout each. Buckenderra, as usual, were great hosts looking after the Tuross Head crowd over the weekend, with lots of fun had by all. Thank you Buckenderra and we are looking forward to our next trip. The weigh-in or should I say measure in was held at Buckenderra, with a good mix of Rainbow and Brown Trout caught and measured using our new ‘it’s all about the length’ system that has recently and very successfully been adopted by the Club.   Congratulations to Ross Parker for his winning Brown Trout at 69.5cm.     RESULTS: Goblet:                                    Ross Parker – 69.5cm Brown Trout MENS Biggest Brown                       Ross Parker – 69.5cm Biggest Rainbow                  Mark Brown   – 48cm LADIES Biggest Brown                       Patty Parker 46cm Biggest Rainbow                  Rachel Ippoliti 48cm Juniors Biggest Brown                       Tied between Sam Gschwend and Lucas Brown 59cm Turkey of the Month:              Not awarded Share this:Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Google+ (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)Click to email this to a friend (Opens in new...

FISHING REPORT : AUGUST 2015

FISHING REPORT : AUGUST 2015

IT’S THE LENGTH THAT MATTERS Well, after probably generations of debate, we’re delighted to have finally settled the matter… according to the membership of the Tuross Head Fishing Club; it’s all about the length! The dawn of Sunday 9 August signalled the last day of the Tuross Head Fishing Club’s competitive fishing year. Members hit the water in pursuit of the last monthly piece of silverware up for grabs—the Morwong Goblet. But that was only one of the many challenges post by the day, for it was time for the Annual General Meeting… and this one promised to be huge. The back-story is one of innovation, preparation, presentation, consternation and deliberation… not to mention patience, diligence and perseverance, but let’s keep this short and sweet. Some six months ago, our Competition Secretary, John Suthern proposed a new scoring concept that was inspired by the success of our popular Flathead and Bream Tournament. He developed a computer-based system that scored a fish on the merit of its size according to its species. To work, the system measures length as opposed to weight. This shift has one enormous benefit: anglers can now score fish that are released to swim away, encouraging competitors to only take home what they intend to eat. This new scoring concept firmly supports the growing ‘catch & release’ ethos within the recreational fishing public… a long time coming! To begin the scoring process, any legal fish measured achieves an automatic base rate. Then for every millimetre achieved above legal length, it achieves additional points. These points vary from species to species, depending on the length of what the Club membership has deemed as a “trophy” in our region for the species in question. That trophy length achieves a total of 100 points and the points per millimetre formula is determined by the difference between legal length and trophy length. The Long And The Short Of It That probably all sounds complicated, but when it’s automated, it’s all very simple. The long and the short of it is that all species eligible for Tuross Head Fishing Club competitions are now on an equal footing, opening up the opportunities for greater participation, family involvement and—importantly—a sustainable fishing future. This proposal was ground breaking. The Fishing Club immediately recognised its merit and its controversy. However, true to his instinctive leadership nature, John Suthern provided open information and education sessions, fully disclosing the process using examples and demonstrations. The proposed rules went to the Membership for a secret ballot on Sunday and, as a Club, we are proud to announce that they were adopted with an overwhelming majority of in excess of 95 per cent! The Biggest Little Fishing Club On The South Coast With scores now being measured by length, cameras now take the place of scales and photographs of qualified fish can be uploaded directly to the Tuross Head Fishing Clubs new website! Of course, there are strict rules governing eligible photographs and the Club will not hesitate to disqualify any fish if the photograph does not “measure up”. All rules are clearly outlined on the website, so there can be no excuses. There’s another benefit that this high-tech development allows: the Tuross Head Fishing Club’s eligible fishing grounds are noted in the By-Laws as extending from the Victorian...

Fishing Report : 21 July 2015

TUROSS PLAYS HOST TO FRIENDLY FISHING JOUST Despite frequent bouts of gale-force winds, towering swell, hail and chilling rains, there have been windows of opportunity to exploit and, when exploited, they’ve rewarded the staunch hunters well. Our local and surrounding waters have been fruitful all year, with big tuna delighting anglers right now. In fact, Club members Steve and Jo Starling heard all about the Montague Island tuna run whilst filming on the Sunshine Coast grapevine a couple of weeks back! Obviously, impressive news travels fast, far and wide. Recent reports from Tuross Lake have been promising as well, with improved numbers of reasonable bream on the chew. Last weekend was the Tuross Head Fishing Club’s “frival” (friendly rival) competition, with boisterous buddy club—Eden Game Fishing Club—dragging their boats up the Princes Highway to pit their hooks against the local anglers. The bitter cold and wind did not keep competitors away, although it did keep them inshore. Most anglers found the going tough, but all reported that the day was fun and the company exceptional. Thank you to Eden for the ongoing banter and camaraderie. Tuross members will be heading to Eden in November for a rematch. Incidentally, neither team has ever lost on home soil, so a win for Tuross Head in November will be cause for much celebration… only time will tell. Running alongside the Eden/Tuross inter-club friendly was the Tuross Head Fishing Club’s Goblet Competition. The target species for July was salmon and there were some quality specimens weighed. Big seas made beach fishing a challenge, but didn’t stop crusaders on a quest for the salmon grail. One such noble angler was John Suthern, who was on the beach to watch the sun rise in a gloriously clear sky on Sunday. He was reportedly quietly confident by 8am that he had that grail in the bag, as his catch boasted two cracking salmon already. John’s quarry was carefully stashed in a large bucket wedged up high behind him in the dunes. That was until a rogue wave rose and charged, knocking John over and reclaiming his prize fish for the ocean! Despite many more casts, he fronted the weigh-masters with nothing more than a hangdog expression and a unique story about the ones that got away. Whilst goblet-hopeful “John The Incredulous” missed out on the grail, he did get up for one of two Turkey Of The Month awards, so his quest was not for naught. Congratulations go to Paul Brown, whose 1.75kg (clean weight) salmon secured the July Goblet for 2015.
