June was Bream month. The weather during the weeks before the weekend had brought some very heavy rain and Tuross lake was still partially in flood and Coila lake had been opened to the ocean after it had reached 2.2 mtrs. The beach and ocean were both dirty with the water from the lakes. This meant fishing was tough in all areas. Still a reasonable number of anglers took to the waters and 13 anglers entered 27 fish. The anglers comprised of three ladies, nine men and one Junior. Offshore only two anglers entered seven fish, four fish came from Rock and Beach and fifteen fish came from the estuaries. Some great bream where caught in the dirty waters.

Mystery fish drew no.11 Garfish and none were caught carrying the prize over to next month.

Boys at the Races

Boys at the Races

The annual outing to Moruya Races was again a great success with fifteen members enjoying the day that started out with the Country Club bus dropping everyone at the course, wonderful catering provided by Janine and Tammy.

Sadly, after the bus had returned to Tuross, David Campbell had a bad fall and had nasty facial lacerations and a couple of black eyes only days before flying out for his African Safari.

This is a fun day to put in your calendar for next year.

Tagging Program

Scott Paul is still looking for people interested in the fish tagging program this is a great program and Scott has put lot time and effort getting this up and running.   This program will provide valuable information for fisheries.  Scott has been planning a workshop to show correct ways to tag a fish and how to fill out paperwork. If you are interested in this program you can go through the THFC website, Facebook, put your name on the list provided on the notice board or just see one of the Committee Members.

Measuring in System (It’s all about the Length)

At the AGM last year, the Com Sec mentioned a number of times that as we move forward into 2016 and gain more experience with the new recording system some small alterations could well be needed. A number of suggestions have been received regarding a fairer size for some species during 2016/17. Please contact John Suthern if you have any suggestions or comments prior to the start of the next fishing year.

Some Recipes

Mussells

Mussells

Mussels & Guinness – Ingredients

  • 1 shallot
  • 2 cloves of garlic
  • 2 rashers of higher-welfare smoked bacon
  • ½ a bunch of fresh flat-leaf parsley
  • ½ a bunch of fresh thyme
  • 1 knob of unsalted butter
  • 1 fresh bay leaf
  • 1 kg mussels, cleaned and debearded, from sustainable sources
  • 250 ml Guinness
  • 50 ml double cream

Method Peel and finely chop the shallot and garlic, and finely chop the bacon. Pick and finely chop the parsley and thyme.   In a pan, melt the butter and sweat the shallot, garlic and bacon for 4 to 5 minutes. Add half the herbs, the bay, and a pinch of sea salt and black pepper. Next, add the mussels (if any are open, give them a tap; if they don’t close, throw them away), then the Guinness. Boil, then lower the heat, cover and steam for 3 to 5 minutes, or until the mussels have opened (discard any unopened ones). Stir in the cream and remaining herbs, adjust the seasoning and serve with bread.

Ginger – Orange Fish Fillets – Ingredients

  • ¼ cup (65ml) fresh orange juice
  • 2 teaspoons minced fresh coriander
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • ¼ teaspoon chilli flakes (more if you like it hotter)
  • 1 tablespoon chilli flakes
  • 4 white fish fillets (if cooking for more than 2 increase ingredients accordingly)

Whisk the orange juice, coriander, ginger, garlic, soy sauce, sesame oil and chilli flakes together in a small bowl; set aside.

Heat the olive oil in a frypan over medium-high heat. Cook the fillets until golden brown on each side, 2 to 3 minutes per side. Pour the orange juice mixture into the frypan and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium and simmer until the fish flakes easily with a fork and the sauce has thickened slightly. Remove fish to a plate and drizzle with orange sauce to serve.

If you have fish or seafood recipe you would like to share upload to the website or give to one of the committee members and we will include in the Newsletter

Eurobodalla Council online survey

cartoonThere is a survey on the Eurobodalla Council’s website that we would like to encourage members to respond to – fishing is listed. This could hopefully get us on the list of improvements needed.

Like additional Parking at town boat ramp park Provision of toilet at town boat ramp Provision of better boat ramp at Coila Lake Formalise the gravel access point at Snakes Flat as a boat ramp – for launching smaller craft

The Council’s recreation feedback survey wants to know what you’re proud of and what’s important to you and would like residents to help them review Recreation and Open Space Strategy by telling them what you think about sports, unstructured recreation, leisure and open spaces in Eurobodalla.

You can supply feedback in a few different ways. You can complete our online survey at: www.esc.nsw.gov.au/rec

More on the saga of the Geelong Star

A number of Tuross fishing club members attended a meeting last Thursday at Batemans Bay and raised questions in regard to the super trawler (Geelong Star) which has been fishing off the NSW South Coast.

The meeting was organised by Labour. The shadow Fisheries Minister Joel Fitzgibbon and Gilmore Labour candidate Fiona Phillips held the meeting at the Solders Club which was well attended by numerous local fishing clubs.

The bottom line is that Labour are not supportive of the Geelong Star operation unless science confirms it will have little or no impact and that it does no harm. In 2015 a dis-allowance motion was moved in the senate, the vote was even so the motion was lost and the vessel was allowed to continue operation.

The shadow Minister confirmed he can’t say he will be able to definitely prevent operation if Labour win Government – ultimately it is up to the Courts and he did not want to misinform the community. He could only do his best and will not support the trawler until science indicate otherwise. A press release will be issues soon.

In regard to the proposed Commonwealth Marine Park he believed the Expert Science Panel had supported the Marine Park proposal – this has not been released by Government. If this report supported the marine park he thought, it would be a good way to proceed. He confirmed the science report would be made available to Australian Recreational Fishing Foundation, this had been previously requested but not provided.

THE Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA) has recently reviewed the Vessel Management Plan (VMP) for the Geelong Star and is now releasing this revised draft VMP for public comment.

This VMP is a boat-specific statutory requirement which sets out what the Geelong Star must do to minimise the risk of interactions with protected species (e.g. seabirds, seals and dolphins) as well as the general operational requirements of the boat. The VMP should be read alongside the general management arrangements for the Small Pelagic Fishery which can be found on the AFMA website.

More information on the changes to the revised draft VMP can be found at Summary of changes in the revised draft Geelong Star Vessel Management Plan.

Those with an interest in the management of the Small Pelagic Fishery are welcome to provide comments on the revised draft VMP by 27 June 2016. Comments can be made by going to AFMA’s website. AFMA will consider public comments prior to finalising the revised VMP and is particularly seeking any science or evidence that would lead to its improvement. The final VMP will be published on AFMA’s website.

Please note that any public comments received may be made public unless the person or body submitting them makes it clear that they do not want them to be made public.

Further information about how AFMA manages its fisheries can be found on the AFMA website.

Smoking banned in NSW national parks

From 1 May 2016 a smoking ban applies to all national parks, with some exceptions. It applies to picnic areas, campgrounds, accommodations, beaches, lookouts, walking tracks, and on national park roads. The ban doesn’t apply to some commercial lease or licence areas, or to private residences located within a park.  The smoking ban in NSW national parks and reserves is intended to: • Reduce the risk of accidental bushfires from discarded cigarettes • Reduce littering in national parks • Reinforce government initiatives to reduce smoking in NSW • Reduce the effects of passive smoking, particularly in high visitor-use areas. • Reduce the spread of hazardous chemicals found in cigarettes (including arsenic and lead). • Focus on community education, with on-the-spot fines issued only as a last resort.

Batemans Marine Park Advisory Committee on the job for thriving marine estate

The newly re-established Batemans Bay Marine Park Advisory Committee will hold its third meeting this month (28th May) to continue working to ensure the marine estate is a popular drawcard for visitors and locals in the region.

The Batemans Marine Park covers almost 85,000 hectares from north Murramarang Beach near Bawley Point to Wallaga Lake in the south.

“The Advisory Committee’s role is to make sure the park is a clean, safe, healthy and biologically diverse marine estate that’s enjoyed by community groups and tourists,” said BMP Acting Manager, Justin Gilligan.

“The Committee represents the views of several interest groups from marine conservation and science to indigenous communities, tourist and scuba groups and commercial and recreational fishers.”

The Committee aims to provide a voice for local groups to raise issues about the health and management of the marine estate and give valuable feedback to the NSW Government.

The NSW Government has a vision for a clean and productive marine estate with a strong focus on economic, social and ecological considerations.

Since its establishment, the committee has met twice and will hold its third meeting in May.

“Visitors and local communities enjoy a great range of activities within the Batemans Marine Park.”

“It’s a major drawcard for fishers, swimmers, surfers, divers and boating enthusiasts at the NSW South Coast and the Committee wants to ensure these activities are being managed in an ecologically sustainable way,” said Mr Gilligan.

Issues regarding the management or use of the estate can be discussed with a Committee member via email
