“Ray Martin”? “Gomer Pile”? They may be doppelgangers, but to us he’s the “Great Suthern Man”.
John’s greatest strength is his lateral thinking and innovation, which he applies to competition rules like a genius. Expect twists and turns with every competition, whether the monthly Goblet comps, inter-club friendlies or the big kahuna—and John’s baby—the annual Tuross Head Flathead & Bream Tournament.
Never one to rest on the status quo, John is an advocate of change where and when it’s needed and is personally responsible for the development of our Fishing Club’s new rule changes, which allow for and encourage catch and release of unwanted captures whilst still counting towards monthly and annual point scores. Resoundingly accepted at the 2015 AGM (>95% voted yes), these rules put our fishing club at the forefront of the recreational fishing sustainability movement in NSW and sure-up our sporting club’s longevity.
True to John’s egalitarian nature, these rules were put to the membership for a vote, following education evenings. This is outside our By-Law requirements and goes a long way to demonstrate the respect he has for his peers.
