Works to provide temporary access to Tuross boat ramp

Eurobodalla Shire Council has this week pledged $10,000 towards works that will temporarily alleviate the sand build-up on the popular Tuross Head boat ramp. The works, to be undertaken between 12 and 14 December 2012, will excavate a hole at the end of the ramp and move sand to the beach on the western side and are a short term measure designed to enable users to access the ramp over the busy summer holiday period.

Council has the support of the Marine Park Authority and NSW Fisheries to carry out the work within the tidal zone. Eurobodalla Shire Mayor, Lindsay Brown, says council is very aware that the excavation work is only a temporary measure.

“We know that sand is very mobile and could refill the hole. We are doing the work because local residents including members of the Tuross Head fishing club encouraged council to take some temporary action to help meet demand for the ramp over summer.” For the future, the Mayor says council is currently evaluating three options for a permanent boat ramp in Tuross Head with its consultant, Royal Haskoning DHV. These options were presented to ramp users during a drop-in event on Friday 16 November and include upgrading the existing ramp or building a new one at Sandy Point or on the Tuross Lake foreshore.

“Council is now reviewing the submissions made by ramp users which will help us determine the option that is the most sustainable for both boaters and the marine environment,” said Cr Brown. He says 150 people attended the drop-in event and, of these, 59 made submissions to council by the Monday 26 November 2012 deadline. For more information on the Tuross boat ramp investigation, you can view the Mayoral report 012/231 to council’s Tuesday 27 November meeting at www.esc.nsw.gov.au. During the works from 14 to 16 December, the ramp and the access road to it will be closed.
